Safety rules around grazing animals

Grazing animals are important for keeping the wilderness open, and at the same time an important source of income for the agricultural farming.

Have you considered that grazing contributes to good animal welfare, good use of natural resources and gives us an open cultural landscape?

We are therefore dependent on good cooperation between the hiker and the farmer to be able to maintain an open landscape for everyone. We have developed two different signs with information on how to behave around farm animals that are grazing freely.

In Sykkylven it is prohibited to keep your dog off leash in this period.

Rules around grazing sheep

Sheep are grazing in the open field from May to October.

  • Let the animals go in peace and keep your distance.
  • Show care and keep your dog on leash.
  • Go well to the side if you meet a heard of sheep.
  • Stop the car and turn off the engine, so the flock of sheep can pass.

Rules around grazing cattle

Cattle are grazing in the open field from May to October.

  • Stay away and avoid walking between the cattle.
  • Do not go near cows with calves, the cows DO NOT like that you are close to the calf. Keep your distance if you see a calf, because the mother is nearby.
  • Cows on pasture and dogs are not friends, avoid walking in areas with cattle.
  • Retreat calmly if the cow is ongoing, avoid eye contact. If you must go back, wait until the animals have pulled away.
